How to Find New Customers – 5 Sure-Fire Tips for Freight Brokers
(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});
It indeed is a challenging job for freight brokers to build a steady stream of shippers, especially for those who are new in the industry. There are countless stories of new, enthusiastic brokers whose excitement disappeared in just a few months of customer searches while securing hardly one or two shippers.
Establishing a new business and finding customers to keep it running is always a daunting task, no matter which industry you belong to. Freight brokerage businesses aren’t an exception to this.
The type of services they offer may vary from other businesses, but the ways to find new customers, shippers in their case, is the same as in any other industry – with persistent doggedness and a devotion to excellence.
Following are some proven tips on how to find shippers who can bring in new business:
- Target a Specific Niche Before you start practicing as a freight broker in the truck shipping industry, it is vital to identify your niche. Once you know who your prospects are, you will better be able to build your expertise for this specific niche. Focus on a particular market will enable you to best fit your customers’ needs, build strong market reputation, and stand out in the crowd.
- Make Use of the Internet Once you know who your targeted audience is, the job of finding the potential customers amongst all prospects will become a lot easier for you. One of the best ways to conduct your search is through the internet. Most of the brokers these days use the internet to find shippers and carriers in their niche.
If you are an experienced freight broker or a well-established brokerage firm, you naturally have a good exposure in the industry, and you perhaps know who are the leading shippers and carriers in your industry.
However, if that is not the case with you, there are many websites over the internet that features a complete database of all top suppliers and shippers in the country. There are several directories that even allow you to see the website URL of the respective companies and let you connect with them via email.
- Be Visible on Freight Boards Both free and paid freight boards are available out there. To get a membership on these boards, you simply need to register your company name with them. There are a large number of shippers who look out for carriers on such boards.
Free freight boards allow you to surf their database without paying a single dime. Paid boards, though, offer incentives such as a credit score – perhaps the most reliable way to confirm if a carrier or shipper is legitimate.
- Cold Calling Still Works! Most freight brokers have cold feet for this tactic. But there is nothing like getting one potential customers at least out of 100 calls made to different shippers.
Often the successful callers have two traits in common: first they know why they are making a call before they call, and secondly they do comprehensive research about the company or individual they are calling.
While it’s rare to get through on the first call, one should not get discouraged. Gradually with time, you will come to know what works and what doesn’t. And this way you will be able to find techniques that will help you gain new shippers easily.
- Make Your Presence Known Online & Offline For creating an online presence, you can take advantage of social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, Google-Plus and LinkedIn. And for an offline presence, it is recommended that you participate in local events, exhibitions, seminars, etc. in your trade. Staying active and ensuring on-time top-quality services to your customers at the same time will certainly gain you a loyal customer-base.
A good Freight broker program always helps greenhorn brokers learn the most effective and efficient ways of making customers, and helps them sharpen their networking skills.

I am new to the transportation industry. However, I a veteran in the marketing/advertising close to 20yrs. Transportation is a whole new can of worms… While researching, I came across Scott Woods Youtube Channel. He has a lot of awesome videos especially on creative ways to generate freight leads. I watched these videos (like a 100x…haha) and it was a great start in the right direction. Good Luck!
I took the Scott Wood course. How are you doing?
Hello, Naomi Riggins. I am a new owner of a Trucking Company and would like to chat with you about your progress and maybe you would be willing to share some hardships in this business that you have come up against already.
I’m a new brokerage company (Fulmer Logistics Inc). I have been calling customers with no results, Someone Please help!!!!!
Great article. We are DK BROKERING, LLC. info@dkbrokering.com As with others here we after being frustraited with low rates decided to park the truck for a while. Can tell you that for two months I hired a girl experienced in telemarketing. She produced 135 leads but other than a potato farm who advertisd their loads to anyone no exclusivity we have yet to earn a dime off the brokering cheap loads or otherwise. I’m forced to run all the calls myself now do to a recent hip surgery. I’m trying your suggestions I have experience in sales but it took her about four weeks to generate the 135. We used the asperigus listing Et. Not afraid of beating the brush (cold calling). The only guy I’m familiar with who started 5 years ago brokering on his own worked for another company and although he won’t admit it I’m sure he hit on some of his old contacts contractual prohibitions or not.

I am a subagent for Armstrong Transport Group, I’m looking for customers that need shipping needs. I have lots of experience finding good carriers to haul freight. I also have a trucking business since 2006 and can use couple of my personal trucks to haul I’m new at finding customers but I have worked with Armstrong for 2 years now with customers that other agents have already made connections with, and I can tell that 100% of their loads were covered by great carriers that I have found while working for them. Is there anyone that can help me get at least one customer or show me how? My email adress is mmusic@armstrongtransport.com.

Great read and very useful information as I just started a few months ago myself at GIX Logistics, its a learning process. Good luck to all
I’m a purchasing manager now trying something new. I have 10 trucks that can pull containers as well as move freight, however I’m not looking to pay most of the profit to the broker. We would like to share the wealth. Please contact me at marthafrost07@comcast.net if you are willing to pay a fair rate.
It shouldn’t matter to you what a broker makes or keeps, as long as you know your numbers and make what you need to make.
I’m a broker but fair in my price. I don’t have to make a huge margin. I want to keep both the shipper and the carrier happy. I make money on volume. When I find a really good carrier, I will actually begin lead sourcing these carriers so I know what RPM my carriers need to make money and then I add small margin on it for the service I provide the shipper. My goal is to get more volume from the shipper by delivering a value driven service backed by a reliable carrier. It’s working out great for everyone. I end of being the defacto sales person for the carrier and the shippers go to guy for their loads. It helps that my company is the largest 3PL in the industry brokering 1 in every 4 trucks in the US. The upside for the carrier is that they get paid within 36 hours of delivery and their carrier profile within our company improves so they get access to even more loads throughout the company. If anyone is interested in learning more can email me, joeldleblanc@gmail.com

Learning the Freight Broker process is not hard. Having the patience to deal with shippers, brokers and carriers polluting the market with cheap freight is the hard part. There are so many drivers that will take a load for nothing and this tells the shippers they can lower their prices. This is a risk to everyone but no one cares. They want the lowest rate possible and when there is a problem, that company stops using brokers. Cheep freight is our fault! If carriers and brokers set higher standards, the shippers would have to pay more. I believe this is the number 1 problem.
I have access to hundreds of loads a day. But 80% of them I wont touch. *example (Flatbed load – 47,000lbs 200 miles paying $600).. Almost any self respecting truck driver with decent equipment would want at least 700-800 for these short miles. At that rate would even be hard.. So how would I move this? I would have to find one of these trucks that I don’t trust. One that is falling apart, full of tickets and out of services. Beware of these things. Finding loads and is not hard. Learning the process is not hard. Dealing with cheep people that don’t understand the ripple effects of their actions is the hard part.
This is so true. I can’t believe sometimes the rates a hear. Truck drivers have all the faul, they just care about diesel cost, it’s all you hear right now, but keeping a truck in good standing costs money. How are you gonna move a load for $150??? That’s a joke, even when is 50 miles. You are spending a hole day for $150??? What’s gonna happen when your truck breaks down if you are just caring about diesel prices? Trucker you need to appraise the work you do.
what site are you using?
totally agree !
Scott iam carrier and I have two truck iam trying to find direct shippers can you please help me how to find them
Northex10@gmail.com
The problem is there is way too many trucks in this industry, actually, way too many everybody in this industry. From too many trucks, too many brokers etc. Shippers know this and therefore rates will always be pro-shipper. It’s that simple! Want higher rates ? Need less trucks and less brokers.
We as truck drivers and brokers is our faults we are getting less money while the carriers and brokers fight for prices the Customers are winning by not even saying one word. First of all I think brokers are the worst job thieves. Why do us truck drivers have to make ya money for doing a job that it’s rightfully ours in the first place. You have any idea it costs to maintain trucks and insurance and keep the company alive and above all else take care of bills. All you guys have are bills but no more. So we as truck drivers should be getting paid atleast $2.20 @mile stop this $1.30 bull crap. You guys will be ya’s own demise one day remember that..
Give me a quick email we may be of some help
Great advice… Just started myself…. Day two in and feeling good about it Im just not sure about the market but I will put in the hard work, but any more advice?
17 years for me. Mark is correct. CONSISTENCY, slow and steady gets you ahead in this business. Sell to shippers daily, sell to carriers (post loads and call) daily and ANSWER your darn phone. The money will come. This is a volume business, 1 man CAN NOT do it alone. You have to build a TEAM that works for you. A pool and housekeeper should not me your goal. YOUR CUT OF THE REVENUE SHOULD BE YOUR GOAL. This is a GREAT business to be in but you have got to love it.
Hello Doug. Do you have anymore tips on finding customers and succeeding in the business?
yes martin , you need marketing work then you find customerwho need service which you provide
Great advice from what i have seen. Ive been in this game for 9 years strong. No doubt i had hard times & still do. All depending on the customer. So why is a 9yr agent looking online for sales tips? Because there are always uncharted territories (new niches) & admittedly since I grew a fairly decent book of business I got away from needing to sell consistently. So my advice & personal challenge to all. CONSISTENCY!!! Whether the business is booming or crawling. Sell anyway!!!
Wow. That’s good advice Mark. Thanks for chiming in.
I think tip #1 should be, don’t try and keep all the money. Get the freight and pay a good fair rate. Great carriers don’t haul for free.
Good point Bobby. You get what you pay for in this industry.
How to find new customers? I agree with the author that it’s a daunting task. I also agree with the author’s tips, #1-5. I began this journey 8 months ago as an agent. All of my contacts have come from the Internet. No pre-generated lists for $2,000. Nor did I enroll in $5,000 freight brokering program/curriculum. I was blessed with knowing someone who knew a broker that trained agents out of his home. Hint, hint (tip #1 surround yourself with a good professional network in trucking). As a bonus the broker had a beautifully custom designed home, pool, house keepers, etc. so having goals and aspirations while working in this type of environment came easy. Hint, hint (tip #2 know where you want to go with this business). What I have learned (and mind you I’m still within my 1st year of being an agent). And I’m speaking from an agent’s perspective so this doesn’t apply to the actually broker who in a lot of causes, being that he’s like the bank, basically has a choice in going after whatever business venture he or she desires. Hint, hint (tip #3 you need capital).
Vanetti, help me out here because I feel like I’ve pulled the cart before the horse. The key to finding new customers isn’t that bad. You will find customers! However in these days and times finding a reliable carrier is your most debilitating task. Within my good professional network of trucking experts, I didn’t have one independent owner that I could rely on who could pull my freight. It’s fair for you to question my good professional network as I’ve questioned it to 🙂 I’ve been put on email lists with other brokers and carriers where they’re working on the same loads as I am. What I’m seeing going into month #8 is that had I chosen a niche, had a truck to complement that niche, recruited a driver (or known an owner operator who could ship the freight from the customers that I do have) that finding customers is effortless.
In month #5 I began working from home. I’ve made some commission but not enough. Failure is not an option for me. I refuse to quit but my motivation is fading. Any tips or advice is truly appreciated.
Anonymous, it sounds like I just wrote this post. I’m a new agent also; have some customers, but not steady loads and am challenged w/ earning a steady income. I enjoy it and have too much invested to walk away. If anyone can provide info or lead me in a profitable direction, my email is darcy@btctransportsystems.com
Thanks for your time!

Hello Anonymous,
I would like to speak with you further on the opportunity of becoming a broker agent. Your Advice would be sincerely appreciated. For the last 3-1/2 years, I’ve done endless research and only came up with Broker Agent Training Programs that would really do me no justice in the end.
I grew a passion for this type of business four years ago when I was given the opportunity to work for a small trucking company as a Driver Service Representative, where I gained experienced using the load boards, building relationship with brokers and carriers.
I can be reached at poinci29@gmail.com
Thank you

We can teach anyone the business of Freight Brokering. We are America’s most successful freight broker training program. http://www.freightbrokertrainer.com
My name is Daniel, I would like to.know more about the business. Please call me at 562 324-5285
If your freight broker training is anything like your dispatch training then d everybody needs to stay away. They don’t reply to your emails and no help once you pay your cash. All information in this course can be found on the internet for free. So I would be weary of hopping into this class
I took this class as well and you are correct they charge a crazy money only to teach you nothing about the industry and the sad part id they ae not even in the business of brokering, dispatching or any form of trucking industry. They are cons. Beware
